  1. LadyinRed Axon says:

I’ve remained somewhat silent on the September 6 exploit of Second Life, but I have followed the forum posting from Second Citizen where “EvilBastardPerson” confessed to hacking my account and several others. On September 3rd I was kicked out of game when someone accessed my account while I was on line. Using an instant message system I contacted a friend in game who contacted Live Help to tell them to freeze the account. Of course, they wouldn’t because they weren’t the account owner. The short version of the story is I lost over 1000 USD in inventory, my first land and 5000 Lindens in my account. When I was able to get back in game using an alternate account Live Help refused to talk to me and told me I would have to wait until Tuesday and contact customer support (remember this was a holiday weekend). Customer support left a very bad taste in my mouth. They were cold, uncaring and bordered on being rude. It took at least 4 attempts to talk to someone and they never returned my calls. They froze my account and when they finally unlocked it the only lindens in the premium account was $40 which friends has given me after the hacking. Linden Labs didn’t even give me the weekly stipend that the account was entitled to because the account was on hold. When I asked if they could recover my inventory I was told (paraphrased) “We’re sorry, we can’t but you can contact sellers that you purchased items from and see if they will replace them.” I will not go back to the sellers in SL and ask them to rectify a situation they are not responsible for.

I understand that Linden Labs did not hack the account and the culprit should be held accountable. However, if Linden Labs had 7/24 customer support they would have discovered the exploit on Monday rather than September 6th. Personal information on us is in the hands of an unscrupulous individual who has a personal vendetta against Linden Labs. We have no idea how much of our personal information was used between September 3rd and September 6th.

Linden Labs needs to step up to the plate and find out how many of us lost everything in this hack and they need to make it right. Hiding behind the TOS isn’t right nor does it create good will with their “clients”. I know of 2 other people who were hacked at the same time.

I understand that the Second Citizen Forum posting from EvilBastardPerson was forwarded to Linden Labs and they indicated that they couldn’t take action because it was a third party forum. Perhaps they can’t take action but if this incident had been reported to the proper authorities, one would think someone could take action.

It’s disheartening. I can no longer use the LadyinRed identity. There was nothing left and when I see her name I just feel empty and somewhat violated. So I will increase the coffers of Linden Labs directly and indirectly by repurchasing and rebuilding my SL life. Interesting concept….Linden Labs gets even more money because of hacker.

Thank you for letting me ramble. This is a story that must be told and not forgotten. Linden Labs needs to do the right thing.
